Last month, we published an article on Nollywood movie stars switching to television. It appears many more actors are making the switch. Because television is increasingly becoming a writer’s medium, it is attracting the best acting talent. Actors who would have run from television a decade ago are now embracing it precisely because the quality is improving.

The Island is a new Nigerian Television series starring Omotola Jalade, Eku Edewor, Toolz Oniru, Stephanie Coker, Munachi Abi, Ademola Adedoyin, Derin ‘DJ’ Caise, Somkele Iyamah, Rotimi ‘DJ Exclusive’ Alakija, Zainab Balogun, Venita Akpofure, Jimmie, Stephine, Tracy Nwapa amongst others.

Synopsis

The Island portrays the web of intrigue and machination that characterizes Nigerian high society, as seen through the loves, lives, and exploits of a group of young, attractive, highflying island dwellers in the city of Lagos. Directed by Bobby Boulders on various exotic locations across Africa, The Island features an absolutely stunning and amazingly talented ensemble cast, made up of personalities that will keep you glued to the television as they come together to portray a lifestyle where love and loyalty come with a price-tag and power is only a game of changing seasons.

Many have asked why big movie stars like Omotola Jalade and Rita Dominic are making the switch to TV  which is perceived as an inferior form. Most people argue that TV is only populated by actors who can’t get work in the movies aka the big screen. When we think about washed up acting careers, we think of movie stars who were once big names, but now struggle with getting a decent role in one. Thus the perception that TV is where you go when the film roles dry up.

Forget what you’ve read about cinema’s dominance over the small screen. Television has plenty to teach the movies about characterisation, storytelling and breaking new talent.

At its best, a TV show can be freeform, veering from comedy to thriller to horror and back again.

We are eager to see what The Island brings to ourTV screens.See some pictures from the set below.
